Yes, horseguy good suggestions. I know that looking down can work, but I am afraid of teaching them forever looking down, and then having to unlearn that habit. So I was looking for another way to teach it. The egg idea is a good visual of how to teach the feel and how to sit the canter, or move with it, really.
I wonder sometimes if having them be on the wrong lead on purpose, and then feeling the difference when its right, would help. But it is a difficult thing to teach feel, where it has never existed.

Teach them how to feel the horse's feet first. When they can consistently feel the horse's hind legs begin to leave the ground, then they will be able to accurately cue the horse consistently without having to look down. The human head weighs 12 lbs (give or take) and just moving it can radically affect the horse's movement. Cue when the outside hind is coming off the ground.
