This is not a deep or particularly thought-provoking question, just something that crossed my mind. I have always checked on my horses once every 12 hours (at a minimum), even if they weren't being grained. Recently, someone told me that they lay eyes on their horses just once per day. Is this a reasonable program? Is it common?

I'm a check them twice a day person, unless I suspect something or they are in treatment. I think that is pretty common. But I know people who do post season turnout on good grass with run-in sheds who check every other day. I once bought a 6 mo. old draft cross colt that the guy discovered by a mare's side one morning in on eof his paddocks. He turned the mare and the colt out in a far back pasture with a pond and checked them from his back porch, and that was as close to them as he got until the day I came to by the colt. (I live in Pennsylvania) Pretty wild prospect but the mare and the baby were fine.

I've always liked hanging out with my horses. I lived in areas where ticks etc were very common, so I had hands on horses at least a few times per day.
I think they are fine with minimal contact, I just like to be out with them more than that. The horses I have had have all seemed to enjoy it as well.
