Some people do suck. This is the worst abuse of a horse I think I have ever encountered. I can't imagine.

I hope they find whoever did this. I think they should also be hit with 130 paintballs. I'm a fan of punishments fitting the crime.

UpdateHere's an update to the case. Of course there was an illegal horse dealer involved. Of course he's got a history of abuse.

It's the part about "$10,000 reward is still available for tips". It's great that people want to get info on this extreme abuse, but why does it take such extreme incidents to get people involved on a practical level? $10,000 is a lot of money and it could be argued that there are so many other horses that could use part of that pile of cash, but their circumstance is lesser neglect and abuse. In totality, the horse community does not allocate and apply resources very reasonably when it comes to neglect and abuse.

Happy ending. You will never guess who adopted the horse Lily that was hit by over 100 paint balls.

I just saw in the Pennsylvania equestrian that the guy who transported this horse went to trial and was fine over $3,000 and ordered to pay over $10,000 in vet bills for the horse. He is from Rode Island.
These "knacker" interstate shippers have been around as long as I can remember. Maybe this will help limit their abuse.

(Don't get me wrong, I think the fines should have been higher)

The $10,000 vet bill is nuts but the per diem base cost at any of the vet hospitals is now $1,000 per day for a horse at places like New Bolton Center. That's why some vets are building their own "step down" facilities where the horse is inpatient but not at the university vet school facility level. Those kind of places are about 1/3 the cost of the big name places.
The sad fact is very few people can afford that kind of "top" vet care for their horse and not too many can afford the lesser "step down" cost either.

That's why I opted to go for "sponsoring" a rescue horse. It's working out to be 1/3rd the cost of a lease. I easily passed through their "tests". I suspect I will be asked to join the training team before too long. I wouldn't mind. At least I'm doing something useful.

If you get on the training team at the rescue and you think a crusty old guy who acts like a mechanic and is no good with people could help, I do a safety clinic for people who have not had much time around horses that could hurt them. I'd donate it.

Articlesadly, the mare that was shot up with 130 paint balls has been humanely euthanized after suffering a fall that injured her neck. At least she was cared for.
