I lease my horse to a lesson program. She's been there almost a year. Lately, she's been really cinchy. They finally emailed me to come and help figure out which saddles work for her.
I groomed her and checked for sore spots. Nothing really noticeable there. She has an average back, so no special considerations for type of saddle.
But..... They use way more padding than I do. And I use a fuzzy cinch, instead of felt or mohair.
What she really expressed her opinion over was how the saddle was rigged. When the rings were more to the middle (more of a center fire) she got pretty agitated, tail swishing, angry mare face. Put a regular rigging on her and she was fine. Stood quietly. I've owned this horse since she was a long yearling, and I had no idea she was that picky about her saddle.
It was interesting to say the least

Were these all western saddles?
Was the length of the cinch correct?
And quite frankly, too much padding can make the saddle and weight move more if the saddle isn't cinched tightly enough. Better to have the saddle fit right and not need that much padding.

Yes, all the saddles were western. Length of cinch is something I talked about, as well as the fact that she's used to having the rings of the cinch padded.
