I just saw a TV show on a technology that could be extremely useful for riders ands instructors. It's smart phone Concussion Diagnosis Aps that can do a preliminary diagnosis of a concussion. I cannot tell you how many time I wish I had something like this. They are not all great. Some are better than others according to the article.

Having had a few concussions, I'm now a LOT more interested in helmets than I used to be. These apps will be interesting to look at.

I did a few searches and I couldn't find an authority like a medical specialty board, maybe neurologists, that ranked the concussion aps. I think it is critical that every stable and perhaps every rider have a good one on their phone. So much is known now about how to insure a good outcome if the proper steps are taken, but first a rider who has come off a horse must know if the have experienced a concussion. The NFL has finally looked in helmets and I think soon there will be new technologies there as well.

Thanks HG. I downloaded one of these apps. I could've used this not too long ago when I took a real bad spill off my mare while jumping a gymnastic that included a down bank...long story short I got launched and literally broke my fall with my head. Had to replace the helmet after that one...it was the hardest hit to my body (my head, really) I had ever felt in my life...saw flashes of bright light, the whole 9. Scary.

I thought any hit to a helmet required replacement because of reduced ability to mitigate damage. Is that not correct?

I think the helmet replacement rule is somewhat like the ten second rule with food falling on the floor. It depends on what you want to do. I did a google search and there is a lot on the net regarding this question. I found almost universal agreement between, motorcycle, bicycle, horseback and other helmet sports that a modern helmet should be replaced every 5 years. It is primarily the helmet sellers that believe that you must always buy a new one in the slightest fall. This from Dover Saddlery, "Replace your helmet after a fall in which it touches the ground, even if it appears undamaged". Seems self serving to me.
