I attended a Buck Brannaman Clinic this last weekend. It was good, and I got a lot out of it. I liked Buck. More on that later.
There was a young woman with a mule she was trying to start. She couldn't touch his ears and he kicked and wasn't very halterbroke, so he would drag her around.
She was in the ground work, foundation class. Buck saw the trouble she was having, and asked if he could work the mule, so he could show the class and the audience what he was trying to get across. This mule was so confirmed in his strength and dragging people around, Buck said he didn't want to wear out his arms and shoulders, so he tied the mule to the arena wall, so there could be an end to the lead rope. Buck used his flag to move the mules feet, and send him by on the fence. Of course the mule left in a hurry, but hit the end of that lead, maybe for the first time in his life. Buck sent him the other way, same response. But after a few passes, the mule was looking for the end of that lead as the slack came out. Pretty soon, he is floating his hind quarters over soft, and bending his neck to the direction of the fence, wanting to find the slack. It was great to watch this. Everyone was very impressed. Then he was able to reach up and work with the ears. The mule was relaxed and accepting at that point, so he handed it back to the owner and proceeded with the class. The woman was very tentative in doing much with him after that.
So the next day, we noticed the mule and the woman were not there. Finally Buck mentioned it. He said the woman was upset, she demanded her money back. You see, the mule's jaw was scuffed up from the rope halter. She took photos of it and sent them to Buck on her phone. She accused Buck of abuse.
Buck simply said he guessed she would rather be run off with and kicked and drug around, rather than have a soft willing partner.
He offered no refund to her. She was evidently very angry.
I guess in her snow flake world no animals every experience anything uncomfortable. I wonder why she came. I wonder what she thought would happen. Maybe some magical pink snowflake dust?
